Structure and dynamics in microporous materials by NMR

We use combinations of MQMAS, STMAS and heteronuclear correlation techniques (17O, 27Al, 29Si, 31P, 2H NMR) to study the framework structure of microporous materials such as zeolites and AlPOs.

The STMAS experiment is particularly sensitive to any dynamics in the system and so can be employed to study mobile molecules within the pores.

The two-dimensional MQMAS spectrum of AlPO-14 (right) exhibits four sharp resonances, resulting from the 4 distinct 27Al species. The STMAS spectrum is considerably broadened by the motion of the template (isopropylamine) within the pore.

Correlation experiments allow us to probe connectivities between nuclei that are either bonded or close in space in the framework structure
