Having completed an undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Mathematics in June 2006 Karen decided to stay in St Andrews to undertake her PhD.  For her undergraduate research project Karen worked with Dr Phil Lightfoot and his group and having enjoyed this she chose to stay within the group to carry out her PhD on a project jointly supervised by Dr Sharon Ashbrook. She is currently working on the development of ferroelectric perovskites, and their study both by diffraction and multinuclear solid-state NMR.

When out of chemistry Karen enjoys a variety of different sports including hockey and swimming but cross country running and competing in half marathons are her biggest sporting interests. Hill walking is also a keen hobby as well as socialising with friends.
