A 3D STM image of the red pigment Diphenyldipyrrolopyrrole (DPP) on a Cu(110) surface, the larger scale image shows DPP growing along the <211> type directions in between stripes of adsorbed oxygen. Note the chirality imposed on the molecules by the underlying symmetry of the surface.
Seeing chemical bonds.
The multifunctionised organic molecule, iminodiacetic acid, on a copper 110 surface (left), the intermolecular hydrogen bonds are clearly visible within the array of individual molecules.
