Amy Clark:

Amy comes from McLean, near Washington, DC, in the USA. She studied for her BA at Mount Holyoke College with a year in St Andrews in that period.

Her hobbies include horse riding, watching and playing football, (that's soccer not NFL style) watching movies and dancing.

Kati Haajanen:

Kati is Finnish and studied for her masters degree at Helsinki University of Technology, in organic chemistry and chemical engineering.

She is currently in the second year of her PhD, working on the synthesis of furofuran lignans, and sesamin metabolites.

In her free time she likes to swim, read and listen to music.

Gareth Knight:

Gareth comes from Kendal in the Lake District, and is one of three brothers here at St Andrews.

He completed his BSc in Chemistry here at St Andrews, and is currently in the third year of his PhD, synthesising analogues of Kynurenine as competitive inhibitors of Kynureninase.

His extracurricular interests involve playing most sports and has been the 1st Team captain of both the university cricket and rugby teams. He is also a qualified rugby coach and is currently coach of the university womens rugby team. He also likes reading, watching movies and socialising with his friends.

David Milne:

Dave comes from just across the water in Dundee.

He completed his BSc in Chemistry at St Andrews and is just finishing his PhD. His area of research is glucosinolates, and he is looking at developing routes to synthesise compounds with isotopic labels.

When he's not in the lab, Dave enjoys playing a lot of sport, including badminton and kayaking.

Dr. John Morrison:

John is from Johnstone on the west coast and studied for his BSc, MPhil. and PhD here at St Andrews. Since then he has been a post-doctoral research fellow at the universities of Cambridge, St Andrews, Pennsylvania and now again in St Andrews. His current work involves the synthesis of Isoflavone Metabolites. The main contribution to this project is to attempt the stereoselective synthesis of the two possible enantiomers of Equol. This would allow for detailed biological studies to be run on these and help provide a practical approach to the stereoselective synthesis of other important related isoflavones.

Outside the lab John enjoys football and beer, he's also been known to throw a few darts.

Dr. Michael Paterson:

Michael comes from Arbroath and after leaving school worked for Hillsdown Holdings Ltd. in Montrose as a Production Supervisor. In 1992 he did his HNC in Biological Sciences at University of Abertay, and followed that with his BSc Hons in Biology and Chemistry. He then moved to the University of Dundee where he has been until now, completing his PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry under the supervision of Professors Brimacombe and Ferguson. Following this he worked as a post-doctoral research fellow for Dr I. Eggleston, on the topic 'Preparation of a novel impedimetric biosensor'. He has just joined us here in the Botting group and is working on an FSA Isoflavone synthesis.

Outside the lab Michael enjoys bird watching, fishing and hill walking.

Kate Philp:

Kate is from a small village called Saline which is quite close to Knockhill racing circuit. She did her undergraduate degree here at St Andrews and has decided to stay on and do her PhD here too. Her work will involve synthetic studies on isotopically labelled phytoestrogens and examining their biological effects.

Kate has a wide range of interests outside the lab, including horse riding, playing badminton, watching Rugby and Formula 1 and going to the cinema.

She is also the subwarden of one of the halls of residence.

Kerry Woznica:

Kerry comes from Lochgelly here in Fife and gained her BSc in chemistry from St Andrews. She is also coming to the end of her PhD working on the enzyme QPRT. Her work has involved the cloning, expression and purification of the enzyme, as well as synthesis of new inhibitors, for kinetic studies.

Outside the lab Kerry likes playing Badminton, reading and watching Football. Unlike the Boss (Nigel) she is a die hard Celtic fan.
